Based in Prince George, British Columbia, the Department of Emergency Medicine and Department of Critical Care at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) are seeking physicians with training in both Emergency Medicine and Critical Care to join our team. This unique position will be split equally between providing services in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care.

The Opportunity
This opportunity is ideal for physicians seeking a broad and rewarding practice that combines the dynamic and varied practice of Emergency Medicine with the acuity, procedural diversity, and team-based environment of Critical Care in a regional referral centre.
The position will particularly suit candidates with an interest in trauma and/or in providing remote support to our smaller communities and supporting the development of our critical care outreach service and/or our NERT (retrieval and outreach) service.
The position offers a balanced practice that allows physicians to maintain and develop expertise across both specialties while contributing to regional emergency medicine and critical care for Northern British Columbia.
The combination of emergency medicine and critical care allows physicians to participate in the complete continuum of acute patient care, from initial resuscitation through intensive care management.

Emergency Medicine Practice
Based in UHNBC Emergency Department, a Level 5 Regional Referral Centre and a Level 3 Trauma Centre that handles approximately 56,000 emergency room visits per year, the emergency component requires a minimum commitment of seven, 8-hour shifts per month, for 0.5 FTE.
There is double physician coverage 24/7. UHNBC is a clinical academic campus for undergraduate physician training through the UBC Northern Medical Program and hosts residents from UBC Residency Programs.
The successful candidate will be a member of the Prince George Emergency Group, and responsible for the full spectrum of CTAS acuities presenting to this high-volume department. Physicians will manage patients as part of Trauma Team Activations. Emergency physicians are also an integral part of the UHNBC Code Blue team, responding to codes throughout the facility, 24/7. As the largest acute care facility in the Region, all ED physicians respond to PTN calls for advice/transfer requests. UHNBC ED is the accepting site for higher level of care transfers from across the region. We have a significant learner responsibility, and all physicians contribute to the supervision of medical students, Family Medicine residents, CCFP (EM) residents and NoEEP residents. Starting in 2027, UHNBC will also be a training site for RCPSC EM residents.

UHNBC offers emergency physicians exposure to a wide range of medical, surgical, trauma, pediatric, and critical care presentations. Physicians work alongside a collaborative team of emergency physicians, specialists, nurses, allied health professionals, learners, and residents in a supportive academic environment.
Critical Care Practice
The Critical Care physician responsibilities include the management of patients on the UHNBC Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and taking referrals from within UHNBC and across the Northern Health region. There is an increasing element of outreach support to smaller facilities across The North for critically unwell patients as well as support for rural colleagues through the stabilization and – where necessary – transfer process.
The ICU component will consist of coverage in our 10-12-bed ICU. As Northern BC’s only specialist-run critical care unit, we provide tertiary level critical care to the entire Northern Health region. The unit currently supports major vascular, gastrointestinal, trauma, and other regional specialty services and handles all types of critically ill medical and surgical patients, excluding cardiac surgery and neurosurgery services. The ICU is a closed unit staffed by physicians trained in critical care medicine.

Our ICU is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, protocols, and practices, utilizing technology and evidence-based practices, including:
• Point-of-care ultrasound
• Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
• Bedside tracheostomy services
• Comprehensive multidisciplinary critical care support
The successful candidate will join a growing, motivated, and welcoming team of 10+ intensivists with a range of clinical interests and backgrounds, and will have the opportunity to be involved in service development, outreach, QI, research and education.
Scheduling includes two physicians working week-long service blocks from Monday through Sunday sharing the responsibilities of the unit and 24-hour call responsibilities on alternate days.

Requirements:
These positions are open to candidates with a base specialty training in Emergency Medicine (RCPSC) and Fellowship level training in Critical Care Medicine. The successful candidate will be encouraged to be based in the Northern Health region and will be entitled to generous rural and relocation supplements should they choose to relocate to Northern BC.
Applicants must be eligible for licensure in British Columbia and eligible for certification through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine, or possess equivalent qualifications acceptable to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS)
• Advanced Trauma Life Support Certification (ATLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification (PALS)
