Burns Lake is located in the heart of the Lakes District, an area boasting over 4800 kilometers of lake shoreline. The village has a diverse population of 2,000 residents and serves a surrounding area of approximately 13,000 residents of the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako. With two of the six local First Nations communities located within municipal boundaries, Burns Lake has a strong sense of culture and incredible local talents to showcase. Housing in Burns Lake is very affordable, including lakefront property! There are two K-7 schools, a K-9, a 8-12 and a 10-12 public school within the Lakes District Area. Additionally, there are two Independent Mennonite schools and one College of New Caledonia campus within the community. Practice Details:

Northern Health is seeking locum physicians to provide clinic-based family practice, Emergency Department coverage, or a combination of both at the Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre in Burns Lake, British Columbia.

This flexible locum opportunity allows physicians to tailor their locum based on their interests and availability. Locums may work exclusively in the community clinic, exclusively in the Emergency Department, or enjoy a blended rural locum that combines both family medicine and emergency care.

The Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre is a modern 15-bed facility that opened in 2015 and serves a local and surrounding population of approximately 13,000 residents. The hospital sees approximately 12,000 Emergency Department visits annually and provides emergency services, acute care, palliative care, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, rehabilitation, pharmacy, public health, and home and community care services.

The community clinic is supported by a collaborative physician team, with Emergency Department coverage shared among a group of 5–7 physicians. Rural Team-Based Virtual Support (RTVS) is available to provide additional Emergency Department support.

Emergency Department remuneration
Up to $3,500 per shift plus Medical On-Call Availability Program (MOCAP) and Rural Emergency Enhancement Fund (REEF) payments
Travel and accommodation provided
Travel stipend of $250–$1,500 per round trip, based on travel time

Clinic locums are remunerated through Locums for Rural BC
$1573/24 hours.

Obstetrical services are not provided locally, with deliveries accommodated in nearby Vanderhoof or Prince George.

New graduates are welcome. A strong support structure is in place, including an experienced physician team and shared call group.

Qualifications:
  • Eligible for full or provisional family medicine license with CPSBC
  • Medical degree
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS): Desired Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS): Desired Canadian College of Family Practitioners (CCFP): Desired Canadian College of Family Practitioners (CCFP) Eligible: Mandatory Canadian College of Family Practitioners (CCFP) – Emergency Medicine: Mandatory Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA): Mandatory Emergency Experience: Desired, Mandatory for ER Locums Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PAL): Desired
Call Schedule:

Hours of work: 9am to 5pm for clinic, or 8am to 8am (24 hours) for ER shifts
On call requirements: ER on call is 0800-0800, n/a for clinic only locums

Compensation:
Estimated Gross Income

$1,573/ 24 hours (clinic), and Up to $3,500/shift + MOCAP + REEF; based on an hourly rate while providing on-site direct or indirect patient care for ER locums
