Masset is situated along the shoreline of Masset Sound on Haida Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, and is the largest village on the island. Major industries are logging, fishing and tourism. Masset provides services for a larger rural area with a population of 1,000 local residents and services a surrounding area of 2,300 including Tow Hill (unincorporated) and Old Masset (IR). Incorporated in 1961, the Village of Masset (pop. 1,000) is the oldest of the islands municipalities. The community has one elementary school and one secondary school.

Practice Details:
Northern Health is seeking locum physicians to work in the Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital Emergency Department in Masset, British Columbia.
Estimated compensation for 5-6 days with 1:3-1:4 call ($9,570.42 - $12,508.84) depending on number of call shifts. This is inclusive of RGPLP daily rate, MOCAP, and an additional REEF call incentive of $500/24h call. $735/call shift incentive (for weekend call coverage and weekdays between 1600 – 0800). 5 days/1 call: $9,570.42. 6 days/2 call: $12,508.84
Locum travel, accommodation, and travel time stipend covered through RGPLP. Please note that each assignment must be a minimum of 5 days.
For a typical 5-day assignment, you can expect a combination of in-clinic pre-booked patients and ER on-call. On-call emergency department shifts are 24 hours on weekdays, 0800-0800 and 48 hours for weekend call from Saturday morning through to Monday morning.
The call rotation is 1:4 when fully staffed. Locums can choose to take on more call if they are interested. You can expect to see 10-15 patients per 24 hrs. On call physicians are expected to assist with reviewing outpatient measures and assisting with urgent call backs. When on call, physicians can be at home, but need to be within 15 minutes of the hospital. Locums coming to Masset would be expected to do primary care and ER.
The Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital is an eight-bed facility (four acute and four long-term care) with Emergency. Services provided are, general medicine, community health, public health, and mental health.
